A panel led by professional women in the law field has shed some light on the effectiveness of workplace flexibility. While lawyers are known to put in harsh, strict hours, this panel of four professionally ranked legal experts is working to challenge the tradition of lawyer’s workplaces. In order to protect your client’s operations during this potential shift, a Lawyer Professional Liability is recommended.
Inside Counsel cited the key players in the discussion as Laura Cox, principal-in-charge of government, regulatory affairs and public policy at PwC, Maria Pasquale, senior vice president at Celgene, Jane Imperatore, partner at VLP Law Group, and Susan Smith Blakely, author or “Best Friends at the Bar.”
As most lawyers would agree, 80 hour work weeks are not uncommon. However, Blakely argues that rather than working harder, lawyers should work smarter and reduce the time spent at the office. What’s more, Pasquale recommends encouraging open communication among employees and giving credit where credit is due to improve workplace morale.
As more and more women join the law field, these women strive to encourage these law firms to allow flexible work schedules to accommodate families and other pressing matters. While this may be new territory, Inside Counsel states that three or four day work weeks are becoming a reality.
Further, promote employee engagement by staying connected and asking important questions. Actively listening to responses is a key component to success, as well. This can open the door for discussions for improvement and encourage employee growth.
In order to achieve this, upper management should be implementing these tactics. Imperatore states, “The tone can be set from the top and the middle. You can have someone in that position speaking openly and honestly that they can’t be on a call because they have to go to a parent teacher conference.” With this acceptance, a more flexible workplace becomes possible.
